Stop the Excuses! Go to the Dentist

By Laura McMullen Oh, you don't love spending time and money as a stranger picks, buffs, scrapes, fills or pulls your teeth? Join the club. No one says you ought to enjoy dental appointments, but that doesn't mean you should skip them. It's through the mouth that we breathe, eat , communicate and kiss, so it's usually worth 45 minutes of discomfort to keep your mouth healthy. If you're not convinced, we've debunked three popular excuses for skipping appointments. Dental work is too expensive. Many of us have dropped a swollen, drool-soaked jaw upon leaving a dental appointment and hearing the cost of the procedure. In fact, more than one in three Americans delays dental care because of their financial situation, according to a 2013 survey by ORC International and Aspen Dental , which also shows that 61 percent of workers making less than $...

Brush for Brain Health!

Researchers from New York University found that gum disease may be associated with an increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Inflammation in the gums may also lead to inflammation in the brain which over time can cause cognitive dysfunction. This is based on 20 years of data which supports the theory that there is a link between periodontal disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Participants in the study, aged 70 years old, were nine times more likely to have scored lower on brain function tests than the participants who did not have periodontal inflammation. While other factors may have contributed to the poor test scores, the association between the gum disease and the Alzheimer’s disease was strong. This research supported an earlier study which had found that Alzheimer’s patients had higher levels of antibodies and inflammatory molecules associated with gum disease in their plasma compared to healthy people. If you don’t brush and floss already this is just another reason...

Are Dentists finally viewed as sexy?

Let’s face it – the media and entertainment industries have always taken delight in portraying dental professionals as buffoons, geeks, dorks and worse yet, torture mongers. From W.C. Fields playing a horrible dentist attempting an extraction to Steve Martin’s nitrous breathing sadist in “Little Shop Of Horrors” to Nick At Nite’s cartoon loser, Glen Martin, D.D.S., we haven’t exactly been portrayed as the coolest people in the world. Even The Three Stooges made us look like morons – something they would never do to physicians or attorneys. And of course who could forget the most famous movie dentist of all time – Lawrence Olivier’s totally creepy and scarily unforgettable dentist in Marathon Man? Just say the phrase “Is it safe?” and chills will go up every spine! Even Jerry the orthodontist on the Bob Newhart show was portrayed as a successful loser. But things may be about to change! Finally – the award winning and highly rated TV show “Glee” has made dentists cool by ...
